The father of soap

I read a Biography of William Lever the other week, an amazing story behind the rise and rise of the Lever bro’s, despite its name it was William lever who was the driving force behind the organisation.

An amazing fellow who not only revolutionised hygiene in the modern era but who also brought a higher standard of living to his workforce.

William started off working in his fathers shop but just a few years later he had built up the largest soap company in the world. The building of Port sunlight near Liverpool gave his workforce thier own affordable houses with more than 4 times the space that was afforded to your average family of the era.

A practitioner of philanthropic principles he believed in a fair work environment, knowing that by treating his workforce well they in return would reward him with loyalty and hard graft. A visionary who changed the face of the working man a lot of his ideas are still adopted to this day.

Not one to miss an opportunity William was a great fan of many of the fads of the day taking up the practices of good digestion, rigorously chewing all his food at least fifteen times before swallowing (this was supposed to improve the constitution) But he also regularly slept in a specially built bedroom, with no roof.
It was said that it was not unusual to find William asleep in the morning with a good couple of inches of snow on the covers of his bed.
