I read a Biography of William Lever the other week, an amazing story behind the rise and rise of the Lever bro’s, despite its name it was William lever who was the driving force behind the organisation.

An amazing fellow who not only revolutionised hygiene in the modern era but who also brought a higher standard of living to his workforce.

William started off working in his fathers shop but just a few years later he had built up the largest soap company in the world. The building of Port sunlight near Liverpool gave his workforce thier own affordable houses with more than 4 times the space that was afforded to your average family of the era.

A practitioner of philanthropic principles he believed in a fair work environment, knowing that by treating his workforce well they in return would reward him with loyalty and hard graft. A visionary who changed the face of the working man a lot of his ideas are still adopted to this day.

Not one to miss an opportunity William was a great fan of many of the fads of the day taking up the practices of good digestion, rigorously chewing all his food at least fifteen times before swallowing (this was supposed to improve the constitution) But he also regularly slept in a specially built bedroom, with no roof.
It was said that it was not unusual to find William asleep in the morning with a good couple of inches of snow on the covers of his bed.

Rubber/latex gloves – the last thing you want is to dirty your skin or worse, damage it with abrasives. I buy them in bulk and just dispose of them after each use.

Knee pads – these are great for when you plan on spending a bit of time scrubbing and cleaning the floor. They will keep your knees from going red and aching.

Medium sized bin – when you move around cleaning up, have a bin close by so you can chuck any dirty cloths and rubbish you may find along the way.

Sponges – you can never get enough of sponges, they can used for a multitude of tasks and best of all, reusable.

If you’re stuck with no cleaning products and wondering what you can you do with your baking soda, then look no further! Here are some great uses for your surplus baking soda which you can try out.

Sprinkle a damp cloth with some baking soda to get rid of dirt and grease. The baking soda will cut straight through the grease leaving surfaces clean and shiny – perfect.

Smelly carpets? No problem. Just mix half part corn starch and half part baking soda and sprinkle this mixture over your carpets and leave overnight. Vacuum the next day and you will notice all the smells will have gone!

Cleaning sinks – mix one part vinegar, one part water and half part baking soda to clean you sink out with. The result is a shiny, clean and fresh smelling sink which will also freshen the drains as it washes away

The smell of smoke can be a nightmare around the house. Sprinkling some baking soda in the ashtrays will help neutralise the smells and is also a great for putting out cigarettes, similar to sand.

White distilled vinegar is an amazing multipurpose liquid used mainly for household cleaning and is favoured due to it being much gentler and more environmentally friendly when compared to harsh chemical substance alternatives. Due to its high level of acidity, it is very effective in cleaning up most germs, moulds and bacteria.

If you want to shine up your chrome taps and metalware that have a build up of limescale, mix one part white distilled vinegar with two parts salt to form a paste. Clean the microwave by bringing to the boil a mixture of half water and half white distilled vinegar. Food will be loosened and smalls will evaporate.

I have been speaking to people at my work and below i have a list of the things that they hate about cleaning:

Hoover plug leads – it is a pain in the bum when you have to move the lead of the hoover when going around

Glass tables & shelves – once you have dusted these you go back to it, it is full of dust again

Patio doors – in the summer children always cover the glass panes with sticky marks from when they have eaten loli-pops

Tidy up – the tidying up of a room always takes longer than the actual cleaning (eg, moving items to hoover & polish)
